Louisiana Property Distribution Laws

In Louisiana divorce, all community property will be equally divided between the parties. Separate property consisting of property acquired prior to the marriage and property acquired by gift or inheritance, is not community property and is awarded to the spouse who acquired the property.

The Court will award property that is necessary for the safety and well-being of the party filing for Louisiana divorce and any children in his or her custody to the party filing for divorce.
